Policing in Canada is a dynamic and diverse industry where many different police organizations work to keep Canadians safe. Different police organizations exist, each with their own jurisdiction, to serve and protect the various regions of Canada. This country is vast and different areas require different services.

Canada’s Police Organizations include a federal or national police force, provincial police forces and municipal police services that provide policing services for Canadians - a total of 222 police services:

• 1 Police Service with national scope: RCMP
• 3 Provincial Police Services: Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, Sûreté du Québec,
  Ontario Provincial Police
• over 150 Municipal Police Services
• over 50 First Nations Police Services

12 Very Large Police Services (over 1000 employees)
15 Large Police Services (300 - 999 employees)
27 Medium Police Services (100 - 299 employees)
65 Small Police Services (25 - 99 employees)
103 Very Small Police Services (under 25 employees)

It is interesting to note that 168 police services have less than 100 employees.

The Police Services are working for the safety and security of 32,000,000 people. They employ 61,050 police officers and 23,391 civilians. Canadian’s are well served with 1 officer for every 528 people.
